Naomi, I have a wonderful memory of my dad from when I was about 17 or 18. He came to me and asked me to pin some patches on the elbows of his cardigan while he was wearing it so we could be sure they were even on both sides. When I offered to sew them on for him, he said, "No, it's ok, I can do it." He used a chunky thread which was quite funky, and he looked like an inkling in his newly refurbished cardigan, with dark patches at the elbows. I should have realized that as a top level boy scout, he was very resourceful!
